Friday Night Summer Racing Series
San Diego, CA - June 25 through Aug. 27, 1999     T   P   R   S

Week #9 - Aug. 27, 1999

It was a close race as the Friday Night Summer Racing Series moved into its 9th and final week at the San Diego Velodrome 8/27/99. Howard Yeh (SDSE) had fought hard the week before to regain the lead over Joe Prescott (SDSE) by just 2 points.

The first event was a 5-lap scratch race. An early attempt by Howard to break away from the pack failed as Joe managed to cover. It came down to the final stretch where Howard out- sprinted Joe to the line.

In the combined Miss & Out, Howard and Joe once again were the final two competitors. Howard held off Joe, but with difficulty, to avoid elimination.

The final event of the series was a 5-lap handicap. This race tests how long each skate can maintain 100% power. Joe proved his ability to keep it red lined by winning this race.

In the end, Howard took 2 of the 3 races that night to win the overall series. Joe finished a close 2nd. Greg Bourque, one of the increasing number of skaters crossing over from bicycle racing, finished 3rd in points.

Wendy Holbert (SDSE) was the overall series winner in the Women's class.

The Friday Night Summer Racing Series was produced by the San Diego Street Elite Inline Racing Club in conjunction with the Southern California Velodrome Association. We thank Verducci in their support of our events. We plan to produce the series again in 2000.

Week #1 - June 25, 1999

SDSE's Friday Night Summer Racing Series at the San Diego Velodrome started last week on 6/25. For our inaugural night we hosted US World Team skaters Dane Lewis and Michelle Bizeau of Hyper. Trevor Watson of FILA/Verducci also came down from Sacramento to compete.

Our first event was a Win & Out. The skaters with indoor track experience had a definite advantage. To level the playing field, our second event was a handicap race, which Joe Prescott (SDSE) won. The last event was a 3-lap scratch race, where the second lap was run on the banked surface.

What an exciting night of bicycle and skate racing with entertainment provided by our MC's. Skater attendance was lower than we would have liked, so please try to make it out to a future race. The series runs almost every Friday through August 27, including this Friday 7/2, the start of our long weekend.

See you at the Velodrome!

Howard
